On page 9 of "A Scandal in Bohemia," the reader gets a strong sense of the relationship between Holmes and Watson. In essence, their relationship is one of mutual dependence and is characterized by a deep sense of friendship.

To put their dialogue into context, Holmes has developed a plan to find out where Irene Adler has hidden the photograph of herself and the king, and he needs Watson's help to carry it out. Watson responds that he would be "delighted" to help Holmes, a sign of his deep affection and attachment which is further highlighted when he says that he is prepared to aid his friend, even if it means breaking the law. The phrase "I am your man" also supports this idea of strong friendship and devotion.

Conversely, on Holmes' side, the fact that he has turned to Watson for help is an indicator of the strength of his regard. In addition, Holmes tells Watson that he must not join in with the ensuing "unpleasantness" which is sure to occur, and this is not just for practical reasons, but also because Holmes feels a need to protect and maintain the safety of his friend, Dr. Watson.

In sum, then, this dialogue demonstrates the deep connection shared by Holmes and Watson while also building suspense ahead of forthcoming drama at Briony Lodge.
